Stereotyping - My Boyfriend, the Half-Breed I sat across the table from my dad while he stared at me with a disbelieving look on his face. My mom sat to the right of me with tears in her eyes. She could see my pain as well as my dads, and she knew the war that was about to start between my own father and me. My brother sat to the left of me making comments that only made the situation worse. I could feel myself dying inside as my heart began to break. I had no idea how to deal with the situation that I had gotten myself into. My new boyfriend was mixed in races, and my dad was totally against it. I sat there crying while trying to make him understand, saying things like, "Dad, he's a person not a color." But, it was like talking to a brick wall. My dad was brought up with the belief that races do not mix under any circumstances. I did not realize that dating someone whom was not completely of my race would tear my dad and I apart. We had talked about it before, but I did not think he would react the way that he did . The words and fights that followed tore me apart. I went from being near perfect in my fathers eyes to being a "spoiled, selfish brat" whom supposedly only cared about myself. I could not believe those words were coming out of my dad's mouth. Things got so bad that I did everything I could to stay away from home for as long as I could. I even tried to move out. I got yelled at every time I walked through the door. I went from being great to not being able to do anything right, and it all happened over night. To make things worse, some of my friends started to look at me in different ways too. If I wasn't around, they would say things like, "I can't believe Lori is a nigger lover." Others talked about me and said what I was doing was immoral. According to a large portion of society today, immorality is the act of doing something that is not traditionally done.

An Evening Walk by the Sea Shore Essay

After a hard day’s work, nothing is more refreshing than a quiet walk along the shore of the sea. While the exercise is good for our bodies, the presence of the ocean seems to have a pe ­culiarly tranquillizing influence upon our minds. Every sight and sound inspires a spirit of rest and peacefulness; and the effect is enhanced by the absence of the sights and sounds to which we have been exposed throughout the day. It is a delightful change, after escaping from the noisy bustle of our daily work, to hear the ceaseless music of the waves, and to breathe the fresh sea-breezes instead of the vitiated atmosphere of office or class-room. During our walk along the margin of the sea we enjoy the view of the broad expanse of waters spread out before our eyes, an unfailing source of delight to any one capable of appreciating the beauties of nature. For the ocean in all its changeful moods never ceases to be beautiful, and is especially beautiful at the hour of sunset. The spectacle presented by the setting sun, as it sinks beneath the ocean wave, is one of the greatest charms of an evening walk by the seashore. In India, for the greater part of the year, the clouds, whose fantastic shapes and brilliant hues add so much to the beauty of an English sunset, are wanting. But even in a cloudless sky when â€Å"the broad sun is sinking down, in his tranquility† and â€Å"the gentleness of heavens on the sea,† the spectacle presented to the eye is full of claim beauty. For some time after the sun has set, the sky is suffused with delicate tints of colour, until the first stars begin to appear on its darkening surface, and day finally gives place to night. In the beginning and the end of the monsoon we have splendid specimens of cloudy sunset, such as surpass the most vivid description given by En ­glish poets, and would, if faithfully depicted on canvas, be con ­demned as exaggerated representations of nature. At this time of year, while the evening sky is still of an intense blue, the clouds are tinged with gold, and purple, and all the colors of the rainbow, and the sea beneath repeats the brilliant coloring of the sky and the clouds above. From such a revelation of the beauties of nature the poor man derives as much pleasure as the choicest collection of paint ­ings and sculptures and other works of art affords to the million ­aire. Indeed, when we look with reverent awe upon the sea and sky at the hour of sunset, it does not seem  strange to us that the great powers of nature were once worshipped as gods; and the tranquillizing effect that the sea, especially in the evening, has upon the spectator, enables us to understand how the ancients found it natural to go to the shore and pour out their sorrows to the sea, when the hearts were overburdened with care and no mortal being seemed capable of giving consolation. Wordsworth, the great English poet, felt and beautifully expressed this in his sonnet beginning. â€Å"The world is too much with us,† in which he mourned the fact that most people had lost the power of appre ­ciating the beauty of nature, by giving themselves up to business and worldly pleasure â€Å"late and soon, Getting and spending we lay waste our powers.† He ends with this passionate outburst of desire for the old Greek love and reverence for nature. â€Å"Great God! I’d rather be A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn, so might I, standing on this pleasant lea, Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn; Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea; Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.†

After analysing certain interpretations in Anita Me I agree with Meera Syals opinion that if you judge people in groups; you do not understand humanity. I think Syal has used typical stereotypes so that viewers can relate to issues and prejudices that relate to them also. As an Asian herself, Syal has portrayed the old-fashioned traditional views of Asian families within her Indian characters in Anita Me. In Anita Me, Meena seems to experience a clash of both Eastern and Western cultures. She is a young girl trapped between growing up in the Western culture where she has been born and brought up, however her parents still want her to adapt to her Eastern Cullture although she is a British Asian and expect her to follow†¦show more content†¦British Asians have finally broken out of this confined box and have many more opportunities to pursue the careers that theyd like to. Although her family are respected and Meena thinks she is just like any other kid be it brown or white, she always seems to be reminded that they are `different in comparison to the `others. At school we get an insight on the way she is treated by her teacher who doesnt praise Meena as she would to the white kids. However, there are several social factors which contribute to the epidemic. Studies have shown that poverty rates for minority groups, such as Blacks and Hispanics, are significantly higher. Furthermore, Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to become obese than Whites. This isn’t just a coincidence. The United States has a long history of inequality and disparities between races. The country’s economic policies tend to favor the wealthy so it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that there is a huge wealth gap between people of color and Whites in America. This gap is large enough so it defines the standard of living in the U.S. The poor population of the country is unable to live up to that standard and hence, faces many issues. Obesity is just one of them. Today, you can practically get an entire meal for under a buck at your local fast food restaurant. Fast food chains, such as McDonald’s and Taco Bell, have sole interest: they want to increase their market share. They do this by lowering prices of their greasy hamburgers and oily fries and since consumers are broke, it sounds like a win-win situation. Customers get cheap food and restaurants make more money for their shareholders. It’s all good until somebody gets hurt, right? Well, in this case, somebody gets hurt. Based on the nature of service it has been observed that the highest number of staff is required as casual staff required are waiters in the restaurant. The total numbers of staff are segregated as per the customers per hour that need to serve. Hence it is observed that the number of the employees required to serve 200 numbers of the customers in the restaurant is 33, when the rate of customer attendance is 150 the number of staff which is needed is 26. Roderick Benjamin Period 3 May 18 2017 Was Reconstruction of the South success? After the civil war there was reconstruction which was when they attempted to rebuild the south. Reconstruction of the south wasn't successful without free labor and slaves. Some of the reasons why is because of the KKK, segregation, and black codes. This was an important subject to blacks because of inequality. To begin with, the KKK was one of the many negative outcomes of reconstruction. KKK was created by Democrats. They murder both black and white Republicans because they don't believe every man was created equal equal rights. Another reason they were created was because black people were taking all of the jobs because they were not slaves any more. The KKK also approved with something called black codes. The KKK didn't help reconstruction because Amendment 14 says "All persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction (power) the equal protection of the laws."(Document B) This is an example of how reconstruction was not a success. Secondly, Black Codes was another con of reconstruction. Black Codes were made by the Confederate states or the south. These codes were laws or rules that black people had to follow. Such rules made it nearly impossible to vote for blacks. For a black person to vote they would have to pass a literature test or pay a lot of money or get permission by a white person. An example of a black code is "No negro shall be permitted to rent or keep a house within the said parish." This goes into conflict with the 15 Amendment. The 15 Amendment says "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." (Document C) This proves again that reconstruction wasn't a success. Lastly, Segregation didn't help reconstruction. Segregation means "Separate, but equal". Segregation was allowed in any country as long as it was separate but equal. It was supposed to be equal but it clearly was not. In Document F it shows a picture of two water fountains and one is old, gross, and it looks like it's made of scrap metal(colored). The other is nice, fancy, clean, and well made (white). Also if you were colored you had to sit in the back of the bus and back then that's where the motor of the bus was located so it could get really hot and that would be a pain in summer but a benefit in the winter. I know this from prior knowledge. This is ideal to how reconstruction was not a success. Rehabilitation concerning the south was not a benefit when it comes to equal rights. The reason was because of the KKK, Black Codes, and Segregation. The purpose on why we care for this situation is so we could move on from slavery and finally have same rights and so that we don't repeat Segregation and Black Codes and so we know that this whole situation was wrong and was not honorable.
